成年犬中有五分之一患有骨关节炎，这是一种进展性疼痛性疾病，可降低活动能力和生活质量。1
Purina 的研究
在一项具有里程碑意义的研究中，Purina 的研究人员从幼犬时期开始监测 48 只拉布拉多寻回犬的一生健康状况。2 结果表明，从幼犬时期开始采用维持精瘦身体状况的饮食，不仅可延长犬的寿命，还可显著降低犬骨关节炎的患病率。2-4
在这项研究中，每组中 50% 的犬首次需要长期治疗骨关节炎的平均年龄在精瘦喂养组（13.3 岁）中明显晚于 (P < 0.01) 对照喂养组（10.3 岁）。2
截至 2 岁，精瘦喂养犬的髋关节发育不良发生率比对照组低 50%，且髋关节发育不良的严重程度要低得多。5
研究结束时，精瘦喂养组仅 50% 出现髋骨关节炎影像学特征，而对照喂养组则高达 83%。3
维持精瘦身体状况也使得犬到 8 岁时肩骨关节炎和肘骨关节炎的患病率及严重程度分别较低。4
